IMED Valencia as reference hospital in radiotherapy treatment for cancer

Press Releases | 14 de Diciembre de 2017
  • The new Oncologic Radiotherapy Service begins its activity and includes External Radiotherapy Unit and Brachytherapy Unit.
  • The External Radiotherapy Unit is equipped with the Lineal Accelerator Elektra Versa HD of last generation, that places IMED Valencia to the same level as big European organizations in cancer treatment.

Valencia, 14-12-17. The Oncologic Radiotherapy Service of IMED Valencia hospital opened the doors in the semi-basement floor of the center, settled on the beginning of Ademuz Track. The new service has  its own access through  a cylindrical building with big glass windows settled next to the hospital, so you can enter directly to the semi-basement floor.

Dr. Pablo Soler Catalán – Head of the Service in IMED Valencia and Manager of Oncologic Radiotherapy of all IMED Hospitals group- has been the responsible to coordinate the implementation of this new area and manage an oncologic service prepared to be on the cutting edge of treatments in Radiotherapy oncology. Dr. Soler has experience on the implementation of this kind of units, because last years he managed the Oncologic Radiotherapy Service of IMED Elche.

The new specialized unit has last generation technology, that offers a wide range of treatments of reference in the area of Oncologic Radiotherapy. “ With the implementation of this new service of Oncologic Radiotherapy, IMED Hospitals wants to be at the same level of the best international oncology organizations”, declared Dr. Soler Catalán. IMED already has another Oncologic Radiotherapy Unit in Elche that works for more than 5 years.  Moreover, during 2018 will be open another Oncologic Radiotherapy center in Murcia.

Equipment

The investment for the service opening is about 3 million Euros for all the facilities. IMED had the linear accelerator of Elektra brand, Versa HD™ model, with photons energy of 6, 10 and 15 MV with filter, and 6 and 10 MV with no filter, with multilayer Agility™. As Dr. Pablo Soler Catalán said, “we are proud of having an accelerator as this one in Valencia, because it settle us in the highest level and makes possible to offer wide accuracy treatments”.

The accelerator has features that can increase the treatment quality and patient’s safety, among others:

  • The unit iviewDose allows automatically, to verify the dosimetry for each patient’s treatment session.
  • The system Bearthing Gating ABC 3.0, allows the synchronization of the treatment with the breathing movement of the tumour, providing an excellent accuracy when the treatment is administered, reducing the dose to the healthy tissue.
  • The 4D Symmetry System allows to verify the anatomic position and the movement during the treatment, which allows the dose scale with safety.
  • Hexapod table, robotic table with geometric correction in 6 grades of freedom.

With this technology we offer high accuracy treatments, thanks to the imaging control adapted for each technique (IGRT, image-guided radiation therapy), among those we highlight IMRT (Intensity-modulated Radiotherapy), VMAT (Volumetric modulated arc therapy), Radiosurgery and SBRT / RTED (Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy[ES][ME] Radioterapia

The service is completed with Brachytherapy Unit, that has radio-operating room fully equipped with needed applicators for different pathologies treatment. In it is settled a Brachytherapy equipment of high-dose rate (HDR) of after loaded equipment of the brand Nucletron, model Flexitron. In a near future we will have low-dose rate Brachytherapy (LDR), for specified treatment of prostate cancer. As supplement of the service, patients that need shortly hospitalization, as in some procedures of Brachytherapy, will remain admitted in the hospitalization guard in private rooms.

Human team

The new service has the support of all IMED Valencia Hospital staff. Specifically, for the opening, the unit will count with two radiotherapy oncologists, a hospital radio physicist, a dosimetrist and two technicians. It is planed taht the team grows in the next months as the activity is increased.

Oncologic Radiotherapy

The oncologic radiotherapy is a branch of clinical medicine that uses the ionizing radiation, isolated or in combination with other therapeutic modalities, usually for cancer treatment and other non neoplasic diseases. Radiotherapy, with surgery, chemotherapy and the new biological therapies, is one of the main pillars of cancer treatment.
